{"id":31,"date":"2008-01-17T05:01:39","date_gmt":"2008-01-16T18:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/modernthings.org\/binthebikeban\/2008\/01\/17\/media-coverage-upate\/"},"modified":"2008-01-18T21:58:19","modified_gmt":"2008-01-18T10:58:19","slug":"media-coverage-upate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/modernthings.org\/binthebikeban\/2008\/01\/17\/media-coverage-upate\/","title":{"rendered":"Media coverage update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadernews.com.au\/article\/2008\/01\/08\/27690_whv_news.html\">Rail bike ban &#8216;backward&#8217;<\/a> (2008-01-08), <I>Whitehorse Leader<\/I>.<\/p>\n<p>Choice quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Seasoned cyclist and eastern suburbs resident Ray Peace condemned the measure, saying more lockers and cages at stations was not the answer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would help, but only to a limited degree; it&#8217;s OK if you don&#8217;t need to ride at the other end <strong>but if you want to ride your bike at both ends you&#8217;re stonkered<\/strong>.&#8221; [seasoned cyclist and eastern suburbs resident] Mr Peace said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"float:right;\">\n<img src='http:\/\/modernthings.org\/binthebikeban\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/castlemaine.jpg' alt='Castlemaine ban protestors' \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bendigo.yourguide.com.au\/articles\/1160858.html?src=topstories\">Cyclists oppose ban <\/a> (2008-01-12), <I>Bendigo Advertiser<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>ANGRY Castlemaine cyclists have formed an action group in response to V\/Line&#8217;s bicycle ban.<\/p>\n<p>The group claims the ban preventing bicycles from being taken on peak-hour country trains is illogical.<\/p>\n<p>The group will meet on Monday to discuss possible action.<\/p>\n<p>One member of the group, Louise Cook-Tonkin, teaches at Tylden Primary School, nine kilometres from Kyneton and says riding her bike and catching the train takes 15 minutes off the same journey in a car, with an added environmental benefit.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Grandfather of four Alan Bull takes a similar position regarding the reduced environmental impact of public transport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have got this Earth into a mess, and we have got to do something about it for our offspring,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The group is concerned about the environmental stakes, from the old to the young.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Global warming isn&#8217;t going to stop,&#8221; said Mayer Cook-Tonkin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The people in control of the trains should think about global warming,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The group feels those who are attempting to take some responsibility for climate change in using public transport are not being assisted by their service provider.<br \/>\nErnie Wright, 78, rides 30kilometres every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my day you could ride to the station, hop on with your bike and get home the same way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They should be able to do it today,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bike riding is more popular than ever with more than 1.4million bicycles sold last year, outselling vehicles for the eighth year in a row.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The action group organiser, Jill Gibson, said it was clear long-term solutions are needed, because cyclists are not going to go away.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This ban is only highlighting what needs to be addressed; the train system is over crowded,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gibson said that a ban will not lessen the stress the train network is under.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Project co-ordinator of the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, Dean Bridgfoot, says public transport providers should think laterally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The issues of climate change and the rising cost of petrol means people are only going to use public transport more,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that the V\/Line service was not the problem, the problem was the denying of the service to cyclists wishing to take their bikes on board.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need more of the train services,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we need a wholistic approach.
