To Jess:

"It is worth noting that at this stage, while transport officers can refuse to take your bike on-board, they do not have the power to fine you for carrying a bicycle on a train. For this to happen, another executive order must be given (by the Director of Public Transport) and tabled in the Gazette. This will no doubt occur in time, but at this stage there is no ability of transport officers to fine you."

So all they can do at this stage is ask you to get off at the next station.

Then again, I've never actually seen rail staff on an overcrowded peakhour train, so it's a bit of a hypothetical ;)

(Also, check the wording of the Connex notice very carefully: surfboards are not actually included in the ban)

To Bethany:

For a city action, I don't know that getting on the trains would provide that much exposure. I think just hanging around the station is more the point. You are 100% correct that jamming onto packed trains at any time of the day with bicycles made of any material, is not a crowd-pleasing move. :)

I'd be happy to help on the day,so please contact me if needed. How about a larger protest that ties in with Critical Mass or Cyclovia or some larger cycling event?

What are the consequences of not following the bike ban? I'm searching for actual details. Also the ban is on surfboards as well. We really need a back carriage allowance for this.

As a rural family with four teenage boys we rely on the combination of cycling and the rail network as a safe, effective way for our teenagers to go to sports, visit friends, etc, etc, and generally just develop some independence. Many other families rely on it for far more important reasons such as getting to and from work and school.

What can I do here in Woodend to help fight this absurd ban?

I know it's the main idea, but I'm sceptical about a whole lot of us with cardboard bikes on trains. I think that it will only make us look like trouble makers and will do exactly what the government are saying we're doing - taking up space. To me, I think we're playing right into their hands and proving their point.

Hi Brianna,

I have to go to work that arvo but if you were thinking of doing the action 1st thing in the morning I would be able to film it for you and put it on youtube.

Can I suggest a city train station to get maximum exposure?

Best wishes,
Kerry.
